Aged 11-16, with Dyslexia
These notes address those who reach secondary school before dyslexic tendencies are fully addressed, as well as those of average or above average ability and yet are still experiencing spelling difficulties.
Free Play
Students of this age group appreciate some degree of self-determination. Granting Free Play (free access to one or more of the courses) can give students room to practise spelling through games. These are the most relevant courses:
- ‘Wordshark’ – taking you from simple 3 letter words through to complex, or…
- ‘Alpha to Omega’ – which is a similar structured course
- ‘Secondary School Subject Lists’ – introduces vocabulary in different school subjects they are likely to encounter in KS3 and beyond
If you’d like to explore the content of these courses, go to Games & Lists\Change Course, or click here
- To allow Free Play, go to Groups & Users (top menu)
- Open up the arrow for the relevant group of students
- Click on ‘More’ to select individual courses
- Note; at first your students may need support with finding the lists most relevant to their needs.
5 Other Suggestions
- Secondary School Subject Lists:
- Some students might benefit from looking at tricky oddities of spelling and mastering these in Secondary School Subject Lists\ENGLISH\Common misspellings
- Some might like a morphological approach in Secondary School Subject Lists\ENGLISH\Building from a base word
- Many will find the pure vocabulary lists in Secondary School Subject Lists useful
- Some might like looking through the structured courses (‘Wordshark’ and ‘Alpha to Omega’), and picking out groups of words that have a common spelling rule or letter cluster or feature that they would like to practise
- Some might like to create their own lists – perhaps even with their own recordings
